Since June 15, 2015 on Vrhnika (Slovenia) archaeological excavations of a first century wooden dugout boat have been in progress. The first week of research is now successfully behind us. We started by cleaning away the layer deposited after the protective action that took place in 2001. After that we discovered that the southern part of the log boat had broken and now rests at a slight angle. The northern part of the boat continues under the sediment of the riverbank. The underwater and riverbank excavations are simultaneous, on the ground we are removing the modern sediments of the river bank, underwater we are removing the fine sandy silt sediment that covers the dugout. Small finds that can be connected to the boat or to the period concerned are almost absent. The only exception is the Roman period bronze fishing hook discovered along the eastern side of the boat.

The most fascinating aspect of this excavation is that we have already identified 14 meters of the log boat, and it is still continuing into the bank sediments.

The whole team is excited and we can hardly wait to see what the final length will be. We are starting an interesting second week of research and we will keep you posted about our progress and length of the boat. Will we discover the longest dugout in the region?
