In March 2026, we returned to Kostanjevica na Krki to carry out archaeological investigations in the Krka River as part of the riverbank improvement works. As in previous campaigns, we conducted an intensive underwater archaeological survey, documenting and collecting archaeological finds, while also investigating the river sediments. Several small test trenches were excavated at strategically selected locations, revealing that archaeological material is also preserved beneath the riverbed.

The second part of the investigation focused on documenting a submerged structure at the confluence of the two branches of the Krka River. Previous investigations had already revealed a substantial deposit of large stone blocks in this area. During this year’s campaign, we also discovered wooden stakes or piles driven into the upper part of the structure.

The preserved wooden remains are particularly significant, as they can provide valuable information about the type of wood used and how it was worked, while also allowing the structure to be accurately dated. We are therefore looking forward to the results of the analyses, which will help us determine the age of this intriguing structure.
