Underwater excavation and documentation of pile dwellings at Kapuzinerisland in Lake Wörthersee
23. 09. 2024 - 11. 10. 2024

Along the Kapuzinerisland in Lake Wörthersee, the oldest traces of human settlement in the region have been discovered. These are from a prehistoric pile-dwelling settlement dating back to the 4th millennium BC, making it an archaeological discovery of international significance.

As part of an underwater archaeological excavation, these remains will now be systematically uncovered and documented. An international team of certified scientific divers and archaeologists will be working on-site from September 23rd to October 11th.

The project is supported by the State of Carinthia (Department 14  Arts & Culture) and realized in collaboration with the AFIN Association (https://www.archaeologie-afin.at/). The fieldwork is being carried out in close cooperation with partners from ZAPA.
